Day 13 – Carriage Hills Resort, Craighurst, ON – Niagara Falls, ON

A short drive south to Niagara on the Lake (Lake Ontario), southwest of Toronto. Thank you, Jane, (our AAA travel consultant) for sending us here. Touristy, but well done and laid back historic old town and wonderful 1864 hotel, The Prince of Wales. Jane really wanted us to have tea here, and the tea room and menu were lovely and tempting, but we opted for lunch instead, as it was about
1 PM. Wonderful lunch – fresh haddock deep fried in a beer batter (never had better) and an assortment of pate, terrine, pickled vegs, home made italian salami, prosciutto with freshly baked breads.
We then took Jane’s off the beaten path along the Ontario Lakeside, stopping occasionally at vineyards and peach orchards on the way to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls where we are staying on the 39th floor of a 42 story Embassy suites overlooking the falls. Fantastic view from our room, and then from the walk around the falls edge, accessed by a steep tram car. We were here once, overnight, about 50 years ago (really!), and our memories are clouded in a dense mist. We don’t like the term “awesome”, but it does seem to best describe the vistas. Tomorrow we sail on the Maid of the Mist, beneath the falls, before departing for Rochester.
